A BILL to amend article two, chapter eighteen of the code of West Virginia, one thousand nine hundred thirty-one, as amended, by adding thereto a new section, designated section eight-a, relating to requiring the state board of education to prescribe a course in the safe use of firearms.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That article two, chapter eighteen of the code of West Virginia, one thousand nine hundred thirty-one, as amended, be amended by adding thereto a new section, designated section eight-a, to read as follows:
ARTICLE 2. STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION.

§ 18 - 2 - 8a. Course of study in firearms and firearm safety.

The state board of education shall, with the advice of the state superintendent of schools and the director of the division of natural resources, prescribe a course of study in the safe use of firearms for use in the public, private and parochial schools of this state. The course shall deal with the protection of lives and property against loss or damage as a result of improper use of firearms. The course shall also include instruction about the proper use of firearms in hunting, sport competition and care and safety of firearms in the home. It shall be the duty of the county superintendent, board of education, directors, trustees, or other committees or persons having control of public, private and parochial schools in each county, village, city or school district to arrange for such course of study in the safe use of firearms and to compel its use in each school under their control or direction.




NOTE: The purpose of this bill is to require the state board of education to develop a course on the study of firearms and firearm safety.
